Welcome to The Scalpel, the official journal of the Scalpel Surgical Society and the first student-led surgical journal!
Scalpel is the largest surgical society in the UK, based at the University of Manchester. The society was initially formed in 2001 to promote interest in surgery amongst students in Manchester. Over the years, Scalpel has grown into a nationally recognized organization, hosting hundreds of delegates annually at our flagship conferences and hands-on workshops featuring leading surgeons and innovative technologies.
The Scalpel aims to foster early research experiences for students and amplify student voices in the fields of surgery and academia. It will include peer-reviewed publications relevant to surgery, as well as abstracts presented at Scalpel conferences and essay prize winners, which take place throughout the year. The Scalpel's first issue is scheduled for release in February 2026.
